M42 lens on K10d

Can someone explain how the metering will function using a M42 lens with proper adapter on my K10d? I am looking for a long prime and the 300mm Tak is a distinct possibility.

You mean beyond setting the camera on M, setting the aperture on the M42 and pressing the Green button to test exposure?

Or:

Use Av mode, stop down the lens, and the camera will set your shutter speed automatically.

(If there isn't a sticky on this somewhere, there ought to be).

I guess I am not articulate enough with my question. Is the aperture automatic (ie remains full open until shutter is tripped) or manual (stays at aperture set with ring)? I want a lens that stays wide open for focusing - like the Pentax-M mounts. Thanks.

No. There is nothing in the camera body to close the lens down for you. You have to close down the lens yourself. This is true with all K-mount cameras, including film cameras.
