Starter Lens

Hello,

I am new to these forums, been ghosting them for awhile but thought I'd throw this question out to the regulars and see what the thoughts are.

I have just purchased a pentax k20d and have a few older pentax lenses, but am looking for decent zoom.

I've come across a SMC Pentax DA 50-200mm ED and have a sweet deal for it, how well would this lens perform in most situations?

I also have a 28mm wide angle prime i'd use for anything less than 50.

Hi and welcome to the forums.
We have a lens review section here where you can see reviews on lenses you might be considering.

If you are looking for 50mm+ zoom and affordable then from what I have seen the 50-200 is a nice lens. Can also be coupled with a close up filter which makes it very nice for flower shots

Welcome to the forum.
The DA 55-300 is one of the better zooms out there and at a reasonable price.
It's optically better than the 50-200.

from what I understand, the FA tele zooms were decent. I dont' have any personal experience just yet but I think i've set my sights on the FA 100-300 F4.7-5.8.

The reviews section of this board is very helpful, here are the reviews for the lens I mentioned...

Pentax Lens Review Database - 100-300mm F4.7-5.8

check out that average price paid! You can get these for a very good price at KEH.com

Also there is an FA J 75-300

Pentax Lens Review Database - 75-300mm F4.5-5.8 AL

not nearly as highly rated and more expensive but covers more range if flexibility is what you need.

Whatever you decide on, make sure to check out this forums lens review section, its fantastic!

I agree with this but if you are on a budget then the DA 50-200mm if fine for now.
You can sell it later if you want to upgrade and get the DA 55-300mm if you find the 200mm end short.

Check out the lens database section to know more about the lenses and their pros and cons.
It was actually helpful to me in finding my quality but budget lenses.
The lens database also lists out the average price of the lens you are particularly interested in, so you'll know the reasonable price or going rate for it.

I don't know anything about the 55-300 except what has been written as I've never owned the lens. But I do own the Pentax A 70-210 F4.0 and can verify that it is several steps better than the DA 50-200. I've owned two copies of the DA 50-200 and was never really satisfied with either one. If you don't mind manually focusing, the A 70-210 is a great lens.

Do be sure you're familiar with the concept of the "crop factor" and what it means in terms of how your lenses will behave. 28mm isn't very wide at all on a DSLR, and 50mm is actually telephoto in terms of field of view, so you'll be wanting something wider than 50mm far more foten than you would on film.

But that isn't to say this isn't a good combo - it actually is pretty much exactly what I use mostly while hiking.
