Old 28-80 mm lens on ist DL not zooming - only focussing

I just bought a used ist DL with an old 28-80mm lens. The lens doesn't seem to zoom... All I'm able to do with it is adjust the sharpness/softness of the image by turning the ring that's between the aperture ring and the zoom ring.

How can I get this zoom to function?

Thanks!

But okay, why does the zoom ring turn if turning it accomplishes nothing?

No problem I had the same problem when I first got a push-pull lens, hehe.
Maybe you mistook something else for a zoom ring, can't really think of what, though. Sometimes it might be built-in hood (if that's the case, try pulling it, too ), but they usually make built-in hoods on longer lenses.

By the way, just so you know, zoom lenses usually have the following parts: beginning closest to camera body is aperture ring (some newer lenses don't have it), then zoom ring (it should have millimeter marks), and finally focus ring (sometimes has distance scale). In some builds, zoom ring and focus ring are one ring - and there you push/pull to zoom, and turn to focus

Awesome. Thanks. I'm so happy I resolved this while maintaining my dignity. I noticed that thing I referred to as the zoom ring makes minute adjustments when the zoom is pulled out all the way.

I really thought the "try pulling it" thing was a prank. Phew....

Thanks again!

Then I really don't know what's that ring for... Maybe it's second focus ring ? Maybe if you posted a picture or something, it would be recognizable.
