Upgrade from *ist DL

I just checked my picture count on my *ist DL and it is around 2200 over the past 2 years. With the new cameras being weatherproofed I am seriously considering getting a different Pentax.

The primary camera that I use I use on vacations (shooting kids etc.) is a Canon SD1100IS which is good for the job. The Pentax is my side hobby, although I dont get to it too much as evidenced by the picture count.

What camera would you guys suggest if I am to upgrade to a new Pentax given a meager $600 budget? I could sell my ist DL to help finance the new purchase.

Any input would be appreciated.

Todd

I'm not sure that "the new cameras are being weatherproofed" in general. While both mid and upper-range models have had the extra sealing in the recent past, I'm not aware that it's clear that there will be a mid-range model, or that it will be weather-proofed, going forward.

So at the moment, your choices are pretty much a used (or new, if you can find an affordable one) K10, K200, or K20.

I should have said "newer". The K200D and K20D have caught my eye.

Walmart has the K200D kit but I;m not sure it includes the newer 18-55 lens.

I have purchased the Km/K2000 after owning the DS for 3+ years, mainly for SR & faster AF.

Perhaps you could find a body without a lens for less, since you already have a lens? I believe the K200 would probably have the first version of the 18-55, but if you buy a body alone, you could add one of the first versions later for about $50, or one of the second versions for about twice that. Maybe the price of the II will drop when the WRs become widely available?

If you already have the *ist DL, then you pretty much have the lenses that would work on any Pentax that you choose.
You can sell the *ist DL or just keep it as a second or back-up body.
You can get any of the K200D/K20D for around $600 now, body only.
The only thing is to find a store that sells them brand new/refurbished at that price.
You can get them cheaper as "used" as K20D's can go as low as $500.
I think walmart online now sells the K200D for $600 brand new..or was it the K20D with extended 3 years warranty.
So, all you need to buy with your $600 is the body if you already have the lenses since you already had the *ist DL.

If you've only clicked your *ist DL 2200 times in 2 years, you'd have to justify spending the extra bucks getting a WR combo since it doesn't just mean buying a weatherproof body.

A K200D/K20D should be combined with either the new 18-55/50-200 WR lenses (don't know if these are available yet), or the existing DA* lenses (16-50, 50-135, 200, 300). I'd hazard to guess the DA* lineup are beyond your budget, so your choice would be to hold off until the new WR kit lenses come out, or reconsider your need for a WR kit.

The K-m is another great choice if WR is not all that necessary for you.

I am new here since I just purchased a k20d. I was real tight on cash and not sure why this happened but had the TV on and cruusing the cannels and QVC network was selling a k20d with the 18-55 lens with a three year warranty for $699.00, I love this camera and I get to pay it off on their easy pay plan (4 payments), I have never been a tv shopper kind of guy but I am so happy with this camera...

I would suggest go with the K200D as this is weather proof and with the extra change you'll have from the $600, you can add aditional accessories which you might want.
You can't blow all of the $600 on just a body, as you will forever be looking for some kind of accessory to add to the body and lens itself...say, tripod...battery grip..extra lens..camera bag...better camera strap...hang grip strap...more memory cards..endless possibilities.
