Glossary terms etc

Ok I am new, I have always taken a lot of great photo's or so I thought, But bought a new dlsr and now looking to find things out which there is a wealth of info here, it is awesome.
I was looking at used lenses to buy and ultimately they always reference something I have not heard of, so I can't compare to info I do have. For instance a lens selling dirt cheap 50 mm pentax 1.2 good so far, PK mount, what the heck is that, I have also seen the term bokeh or something to that affect, I look it up in the manuals and of course nothing, Is there a glossary and term index with explanations somewhere in here and I am just missing it? Thanks meanwhile despite myself the camera (k20d) is amazing, the photo's are breathtaking. Thanks Jeff................

I don't think there is a glossary here yet, and I don't really know if there is one, BUT wikipedia is a great place to get a general knowledge of things. Just type into your browser "en.wikipedia.org/wiki/", and after slash, whatever you want to find out about. For example, type "PK mount" after the slash (without quotes, of course). ALTHOUGH it gives you the page saying there is no article with this "exact" name, click on the second link - "Search for PK mount". In the resulting list - the first hit is Pentax K mount. That's what you want to find out about.

I don't think wikipedia helps for practical purposes, but it does give very good trivia and general understanding. Google helps, too. Or beginner photography books.

Also, you should be careful about item descriptions on various places. Best bet is to look at pictures - it's unlikely that a 50mm f/1.2 will sell for dirt cheap.

Yep. Almost certainly a 50mm f2.0

The f1.2 is labled 1:1.2

The f2.0 is labled 1:2

You are correct, there is a lot to learn

Well, you know what I knew you were gonna say that I'm gonna come back with that!!! Feels like kidergarten again

To add usefulness to this post for the OP: for starters, look for "focal length" and "aperture". That's what should help you start with "acknowledging" lenses.

Bo.
