Lenses for K100D

I am considering buying a Pentax K100D camera body which has 1.5x crop factor. I would like a basic lens for it like a 18-55mm kit lens. I would like to spend < $100. Is this one good? Are there better options?

Assuming you get the version II (should say II in the name somewhere), it's the best $100 basic zoom lens available. Sure, there are better options, but for several times the price - and they'll also be bigger and heavier.

It is a great lens for the money. If you do not have any experience with SLRs it is a great learning lens before moving on to better (and more expensive) glass.

I can get version II for $20 more than version I. Is it worth the extra $20?

Only if you plan on upgrading to the 14MP camera bodies. From what I can remember the II version was released to keep up with the resolution performance of the new 14MP sensor. the I version was released back with the first 6MP camera bodies (*istD). On the K100D I would think that the improvment from the I to II versions of the kit lens would be marginal. However I would point out that I only ever used the I version on my K100D Super and was always happy with the results.

The improvement might be marginal on a 6MP camera, but $20 is a pretty marginal cost difference, too. And version II will be much easier to sell later should you decide too - and will be more noticeable better than version I should you upgrade your camera at some point. To my mind, it's an absolute no-brainer - spend the $20.

If you can get the AL version (version I) for really cheap and you can let go (sell) of it also really cheap, then by all means go with it.
If you plan to keep the lens and the only difference with the AL II is $20, then that $20 will cost you like next to nothing in the long run.
As Marc has also said, it (AL II) has more better resale value too.
The AL sells now for only around $40-50 new or used.
AL II are still around the $80-100 mark.
I predict that the prices of the AL II will fall once the WR lens kit is released as the K200D/K20D users who have this lens as a kit would more than likely unload it for the WR kit lens.
