Noob Question II : PC Cords vs Hot Shoe Adaptors

Ok this is another thing i'm confused about, what is the difference when using an off camera flash if using the PC cord or the hot-shoe adaptor?

As I understand the hot-shoe actually sends data to the flash whereas the PC cord doesn't?

PC sync cord is typically used with professional studio strobe units so no data typically needs to get passed between the camera and the flash unit, other than the flash trigger of course. Studio strobes are generally set up using a flash meter and manually setting flash power and lens aperture.
