I've one of these and I'm very pleased with it; it should cost you around $100, without the head.

Giottos MTL3361B Giottos 3361B 3 Section Pro MT Aluminium Tripod with 2 way column 96.95, SAVE 8.51 on Giottos from Red Door VR Ltd, UK.

You might consider the Dolica AX620B100 62-Inch Proline Tripod and Ball Head. I bought mine from Amazon a few months ago for about $50 US. I took it with me on vacation for a week and was very pleased.

I just bought that exact same for 44 bucks off Amazon with free shipping. It should be arriving today, but for some reason it still hasn't came yet. Maybe UPS is a little late? Or maybe they're going to be a day late and bring it tomorrow. =P I'll post pictures and make a review once I get it. I'm pretty sure it's going to be a fine tripod though, otherwise I wouldn't of bought it.

Convert that to USD and it's almost 200 dollars =P

I am using UPS tracking and it says my package is on time with a scheduled delivery of today. Apparently they haven't came yet and they ALWAYS come before 3PM. They have not came and it is 3PM.

It says Your package is on time with a scheduled delivery date of 07/20/2009. Not just that, it usually says DEPARTURE and at the top "Shipment is out for delivery" or something, but this time it doesn't say Departure. It says:
EAGAN , MN , US 07/17/2009 7:52 P.M. DESTINATION SCAN

Hmmm, just searched that Velbon up and it seems pretty neat too. I couldn't find any picture reviews with anybody that has it, but there were some with the Dolica.

Dolica is a pretty neat tripod for a good price, I have it and I'm happy. I don't really like pan-heads, since you have to turn three knobs instead of just one to change orientation of the camera. The Dolica also comes with a shoulder bag for the tripod.

Another recommendation for the Dolica from a tripod collector. It's too good for the little price.

do you absolutely need new? Try going the flea markets or used photography equipment shops for some really great bargains. Just check the general condition thoroughly first.

The Dolica from Amazon looks good, however some reviewers say that it is good only for P&S and not for dSLRs. What is the opinion of the users who own it?

Eh... I haven't used anything toooo heavy on it, but it handled K10D with a lens on it well. I also used a medium format camera on it, which was about 3 or so pounds.
It doesn't move after you set the ballhead and you can also hook smth heavy so that it doesn't fall. The legs seem kinda thin, though, especially bottom-most portion, but that's been fine for me so far...
Just make sure you get the right one, the company also makes some other ones, targeted for p&s.

Same here. My Dolica had no problems with my K110D with the kit lens and a Takumar 135
