Thanks to all who helped

Well, I went back to the LCS and they had the adapter off in short order. The owner was willing to let me return it, so I'll be ordering a Pentax brand adapter from the Pentax website next.
Although I didn't get the adapter off myself, I learned a lot about the difference between name brand accessories and knock-offs.
After all is said and done, the adapter is off the camera and I'm very impressed with the forum members who were willing and able to share their knowledge about a frustrating (to me) subject.
Thanks again

Were you able to see what they did to get it off? Was it just a funky adaptor?

How did they do it?

They took my camera to the back room and brought it out, sans adapter, in about three minutes. I spoke to the owner of the store who said "These adapters are made to come off the camera." Surprisingly enough, I already knew that. He didn't show me the secret method and by that time I was thrilled to have my k20d back in one piece.
Note:He did try to screw the adapter on the m42 lens I brought with me, then attach it to the camera. It did not work and he seemed puzzled (as was I). I'm sticking with my kit lens for awhile, it's not exactly what I want but it also hasn't ever given me cause for alarm.

Well a good ending, I am so glad it is off.

Order the original that I gave you the link for. You can literally take it off with your fingernail...

And the M42 manual lenses are a joy to use on the K20... I seldom even use Af lenses anymore...

The Helios 44m 58mm - The Tair 11A 135 2.8 my two faves for the last few months.

Dont let this experience keep you from some great cheap and wonderful lenses.
