Evolution of K-mount

QuoteOriginally posted by Marc Sabatella Quote
Just to clarify one thing that might still not be clear - your DSLR uses K-mount. That's why K-mount lenses don't require an adapter - because that's exactly the right kind of lens. Oh, OK, your DSLR uses a specific variation of K-mount called KAF2 or something like that, but it is still generically referred to as K-mount. But usually if you see a lens sold as K-mount, that means the original K-mount - no auto exposure, no auto focus.
A guy named Bojidar Dimitrov has a great website, listing just about every Pentax K-mount lens ever made.

Welcome to Bojidar Dimitrov's Pentax K-Mount Page

Click on the "Technology" link. This take you to a page where he shows all the variations of the k-mount over the years. More than you ever wanted to know.

The bottom line is that all these k-mount lenses will mount on your Pentax dslr and work, albeit with some restrictions. Obviously, a manual focus lens is still manual focus.

The primary advantage to bayonet mountings is that all the compatible lenses will align precisely in the same orientation every time the lens is mounted; this allows both electrical and mechanical linkages between the camera to be designed and work with much greater precision--for example, this was initially the stop-down & aperture ring levers. Later came things like electrical contacts, autofocus couplers, etc.

None of this was very practical with screwmount lenses, even designing in open-aperture metering & auto-stop-down when shooting was tricky and required some reduced-compatibility modifications/extensions to the basic screw mount.
