I just joined your team :)

Hey!

Welcome the new Pentax shooter

I just bought a K100D from another member "slam" Syliva, $210 shipped right to my door.

I have a K1000 35mm camera here and a few lenses - I look forward to trying a Pentax dSLR because I have become jaded with Nikon.

Nikon - they are tricky bastards and disable metering of manual lenses on my camera! Just so I'd buy their expensive glass. Well I needed to reach out far for one project, far like 500mm or longer. The price for a teleconverter that worked properly for my Nikon (af-s X2) would have exceeded the price for a camera that can use any old manual focus lens - like an adapted one bought inexpensively just for this one project I'm doing.

Nikon won't get me! I'm switching to Pentax - who's cameras can use all their lenses as far back as the first M42 lens from 1949

I also bought a 28/2.8 Rokinon and X2 teleconverter (both in K-mount) for a silly $20 shipped. Compare that to the last Nikon prime I bought, 35/1.8 for over $200. Forget it

Pentax is nice I look forward to trying it

Cheers,
Craig

Team Pentax!

Welcome! Those old lenses can really shine on a dSLR. I think you'll find the K100 an excellent camera. I didn't realize how good high iso I had at the time, but looking back on it, it's pretty amazing. You'll like having shake reduction with your (sometimes ancient) manual focus lenses.

I used to enjoy a lot of manual lenses with my Canon 10D and M42 adapter with focus confirmation chip - the AF light in the viewfinder would light up when I achieved focus even using an old manual focus lens ... Do you think the K100D will have focus confirmation in the viewfinder for manual lenses?

I always had a love for the old lenses, metal and glass, like small works of mechanical art

Right now I have a Zeiss MF lens adapted to K-mount "Biometar 80/2.8" and a 50/2 and as I said a 28/2.8 and a X2 and I'm getting a 500mm for that long range project I mentioned.

I need to shoot island lighthouses from shore, if you are curious see here

I'd like to shoot all the lighthouses in Maine ... at least within 2 hours of me

With the 500mm and the X2 teleconverter I bet I'll have the reach

Oh "Pentax" ... It's fun to say!

Cheers,
Craig

Edit : Sweet I got a 500mm f/8 Beroflex (not mirror, it's long lens). It's M42 mount and ships with a X3 teleconverter (Sears brand) and extension tubes (?) - all this shipped right to my door for $30. Now I can capture distant lighthouses

Welcome Craig.
You sound hooked... well, congrats anyway on going with a Pentax dSLR.
The Canon needed a 'focus confirmation' chip installed?
Well all Pentax dSLRs can with their own in-built focus confirmation chips!
You'll enjoy the versatility of using any lens that fits on the camera with stop-down metering ability.
Hope to see more of you in the forum!

spystyle, welcome to the Pentax family and the forum. Interesting project with the light houses. How many are there in Maine?
Know astrophotographers pay $100 for some Focus confirmation gizmo to work with their Canon. Ouch.
thanks

Test to see if dot org works. Maybe the forum doesn't like your link somehow? Welcome, by the way.

Well, dot org works, so it must be something else.

Hi Barondla

Click

I think there are about 20 lighthouses within 2 hours of driving, probably 12 if I drive up and 8 if I drive down. The others are further and I don't care to trek too far ... But I am happy to shoot 20 this year

Hi Larry,

Thanks for the welcome.

I always use "post image dot org" so ... I wish they weren't blocked here

Cheers,
Craig

All of Pentax's DSLRs have focus confirmation for every single lense you mount. Just watch for the green hexagon in the viewfinder. There is also option of doing "catch in focus". Once this option is selected in the menu, you can hold down the shutter button and the camera will fire once the subject is in focus.

Pentax definately makes it easier than any other brand to use wonderful old glass.

spystyle, thanks for the light house link. Added it to my favorites. You should get many great images with this subject. Share some when you get the chance.
