I'd actually take a different approach than Eruditass. I always prefer to leave Dynamic corrections (highlight and shadow) Off unless I have a specific reason for turning them on (high contrast, mid-day shooting that needs a miracle solution to be salvageable or when I really don't want a lot of contrast). Otherwise, I really love the contrast I can get from the beautiful limited lenses. I paid for that contrast, why would I want the camera to remove it. Again, I do use these settings during horrible shooting times (after around 11:00am or before 6:00pm outdoors) but that's about it.
For now, what is working for me is to keep highlight compensation ON and shadow compensation OFF.

I only turn shadow compensation on knowing I will have to do PP afterwards. I don't believe shadow compensation will remove any of your wonderful contrast bit wise, but will make you have to do work to get it back while retaining lower shadow detail instead of clipping it.

If I don't want to do PP I turn shadow compensation off unless there are really harsh mid-day shadows without the ability to fill-flash.

Does anyone how much more or less highlight detail the highlight compensation retains in JPEG compared to no highlight compensation and using RAW? Taking into account that highlight compensation will underexpose one stop.
