Probably because it's 1) easier to produce a 50mm lens than almost any other, 2) doesn't have a sophisticated AF system, just a basic gear system, and 3) it's an older Sigma and contains a lot of plastic in the construction. It's not exactly cheap compared to a Canon or Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens but it's a reasonable price for a sharp mid-range macro lens.

DON'T DO IT!If your want a good 50mm lens, try to stick with the Pentax brand. You may be able to pick up a FA 50mm f1.4 or f1.7 for not much more than the price of the Sigma.Do some more pricing research before spending your $299 on that Sigma.

The Sigma 50mm F2.8 Macro is a very good macro lens. I wouldn't say it is cheap, just in line with other F2.8 50mm Macros of other brands. This is actually on my short list of lenses I want. If you want the working distance of 75mm for your macro or close-up work, this is a good choice. Autofocus hunts a little, but most macro lenses do. Many find it a little short though and gravitate towards the Pentax 100mm D FA macro or the Pentax 105mm macro.

I personally like Sigma lenses. I feel they are very good performance for the price. Plus EX lenses have a 4 year warranty.

If you just want an autofocus 50mm lens, keep an eye on KEH for the Pentax F 50mm F1.7. Usually between $150-175. This is also on my short list. From what I have seen and read, I have decided I'd rather have this than the F1.4.

The Sigma is a MACRO lens. Other than the focal length, it's not quite comparable to a Pentax FA 50mm f/1.4

I'd go with the 70mm f/2.8. Both Sigmas will get you to 1:1, but the 70mm will allow you to be farther away from the subject.

I had the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro when I shot Pentax, and it was a really nice lens.

Currently I have the Sigma 10-20mm and 30mm f/1.4 (on Canon) and they are REALLY nice. Sigma makes some very nice glass. Do not fear the Sigma

There's also the Tamron 60/2 macro.
Unless I'm mistaken that the K-mount version is not yet available?
