If I have the opportunity to buy...

... a NIB Pentax-A 50mm f2 for US$50 + tax , should I jump on it? I saw it in person, and it's definitely new. I have a bunch of zooms and a SMC Pentax-M 50mm f2 with dust as my only prime.

Damn Brit

It isn't necessarily a bargain. If you are happy with manual focusing, you could pick up a 50mm f/1.7 for not too much more if you look around.

Welcome to the forum.

That, IMO, is too much for that particular lens. Now if it was 1.7 or 1.4...

Welcome here transfergirl.
Definitely get an A-50 f/1.7 or 1.4 - these are considerably better than the f/2.0 version.
Do you have a manual focus camera, or just like manual focus lenses?

Neither/nor. I'd read about the Ritz Camera clearance and stopped by the Broadway store on a whim, to find they'd hidden a K110D kit downstairs- the last clearance DSLR. $250 with insurance (things tend to break around me) and a printer later, my Bargain LBA began. Still figuring out how to use the thing as a beginner in photography. I definitely learned that I need to master manual focus when my autofocused shots of nestlings were focused on the leaves around them.

Also, I was asking about the new 50/2 since I wasn't able to price a new one.
So thanks, all. Forgetting about the f2, I will try to befriend some B&H employees and aim for the 1.4...

Oh, and the K110D's going to my sister, since I picked up a used K100D with a 50-100 zoom.

The SMC-A 50 1.7 is a great lens. I think it is one of the better values out there for a manual focus 50.

The "A" setting lets you use ALL of the cameras mode settings, except it needs to be manually focused.

Also consider getting a K-mount to M42 adaptor. If you do, get the genuine Pentax one. It will allow you to use M42 screw mount lenses on your camera. The Takumar lens is a great example of a fine M42 lens. They are beautifully made with a quality you just don't see anymore.

Good luck with the LBA!

A 50mm f/2 is not a bad lens at all. If you focus correctly, you get nice pictures. The A setting takes care of the Av value as well. If I am in your position I will buy it. I can always replace it with a faster lens later, when I outgrow the 50mm f/2.
