Lens Recommendations?

Hey all, I just got a K7 a couple of weeks back, and already I tire of the 18-55 kit lens.

I'm looking at the DA* 16-50 f/2.8, and it looks like a perfect walkaround lens spec-wise, but I've heard a lot about problems with the manufacturing of that particular lens. How bad is it, and what should I do to protect myself if I do get the lens?

Also, what are the non-Pentax alternatives to this lens? Is there anything out there that's similar in spec that you would recommend?

Thanks all.

I would say that a lot of the quality control issues are in the past. I have one and it is an excellent lens. The reality is that there are some lemons of every lens, this one just had a lot of bad ones initially. When you get a new lens, you need to shoot with it a lot to make certain there aren't any problems with it. The issues with the 16-50 were decentering issues which should be fairly obvious quickly.

Anyway, I would definitely recommend it.

I've had one since May (I bought it for a trip to Hawaii). It is on my k20 95% of the time. Really happy with it - a lot of the QC issues were early productions (and a lot of people think it was not as widespread as what is rumored. Thank you internets!)

I have a Sigma 24-60 f/2.8. Not quite as wide but a little more reach on the long end. IQ maybe doesn't equal the DA* 16-50...but for what I paid for it used ($190 i believe) it is fantastic. Pretty darn sharp wide open, stopped down it's really sharp. Fast and great color. Beyond happy with it.

Cons...it's large and pretty heavy. Have trouble using it on my light duty tripod. But with respect to the DA*...they're probably similar.

i don't have one but considered this as an upgrade to the kit lens

reviews for it are very good. not quite as fast as the DA* but for the price seems hard to pass up. I ended up going with the Sigma a little over a year ago because it was cheaper and also came highly recommended.

just curious about approximate budget? The Sigma 17-70 DC might be a nice choice...

My dad has one and loves it.

Blue tangent, welcome.
You may want to start your own introduction thread and ask for advice there.
Start by picking up the basics of photography - light, the exposure triad, terminology and definitions, etc. and then you may find a lot of your questions already answered.

Also check out the forum's lens review database under the Reviews tab above.

I recently purchased the SMC PENTAX DA 18-250MM F3.5-6.3 ED AL(IF) and I really like it. As far as I am concerned, the only drawback is that it does not do macro.
