Lenses? Complete newbie question.

I have absolutely no clue about pentax system. I know nothing about pentax lenses, but I am considering K-7. I currently own a Sony DSLR with these lenses (Sigma 17-70 F3.5-4.5, Minolta 50mm F1.4, Minolta 70-200 F4).

If I go with K-7, I would need to replace these with Pentax alternative. What exactly would you guys recommend to replace this range that I have (the price and quality should be the same at least?)

Also, I don't know what DA, DFA, FA, SMC means. Can anyone explain that?

Thanks.

An explanation of Pentax lens names can be found here:

Pentax Lenses Explained

And this forum has a lens reveiw section where you can see what's available. You can easily cover what you now have with Pentax equivalents:

Pentax Lens Review Database - Main Index

Start looking at the DA and DFA series - that is the current lens lineup.

I might add that the Pentax FA 50mm f1.4 is a great lens to replace your Minolta 50mm f1.4 and it can still be purchased fairly reasonably.

The Sigma 17-70 is available for Pentax too, so you can replace that pretty directly. There is also a Pentax DA17-70 some like better, but others find the Sigma a better deal.

The Pentac FA50/1.4 is presumably comparable to your Minolta 50/1.4. I don't know about the closest analogue to the 70-200/4. There was an old manual focus 70-210/4 that a lot of people like, but if you're wanting AF, you might have to look at other alternatives. The DA55-300 is f/4 through much of the 70-200 range and is a well-liked lens. The DA*60-250 is constant f/4, but being "*" lens (one of the terms Pentax uses to indicate their premium-quality lenses - the other being Limited), and also being over 4X whereas your 70-200 is less than 3X, it's probably more expensive that you might be wanting.

kit lens

I don't know the quality but the new weather sealed 55-200 kit lens is an attractive compliment to the sealed camera. It's a little slower but drizzle proof.

Not sure of the price/quality range of those lenses, but probably the equivalent set of:

DA 16-45mm F4
FA 50mm F1.4 (or DA 40mm F2.8)
DA 55-200 (or DA 55-300)

would be a reasonable kit that would tide you over.
