K7 Noise at ISO800

First: Thanks for all the posts so far - I am definately learning a lot, fast!

Went for a quick hike to experiment a bit more...

Here is two ISO 800 shots (mostly clear blue sky) with considerable better results than what I got initially!!

Both shots straight from the camera - no PP.

Obvious changes I made:

1. D-Range settings off (Highlight Correction: Off; Shadow Correction: Off)
2. Wider Aperture

I'll keep on experimenting though!!

P.S.
Another thing I learned (inadvertently) is the amount of vignetting I got with this lens (SMC DA 17-70 SDM IF) at F/4.

Just remember that you are best over all shooting at iso 100/200. You will have a lot greater dynamic range. Noise is only one issue and cleans up pretty well with noiseware or noise ninja, but you can't get back DR that is lost. I'd definitely reserve higher isos for places where you need to bump up your shutter speed, but can't do it in any other way.

Glad to see your 800 ISO pics cleaned up when you turned off D-Range.

I NEVER use D-Range with my K20 for similar reasons, but where i might, i would expect a lot more noise. I initially shot for a while with it on because i had some confusion with the Fn menu screen on my K20.

Glad you have the settings straightened out. That's what I consider normal for ISO 800. The first shot you posted would have scared me off a K7 had I been interested.

These extra settings seem to really destroy some images. I guess it's just a gimmick. But how is the HDR feature on the K-7, I'd love to know.
