That's not 100% true. On cameras with hyper-manual mode (K20D, K-7 and probably K10D too) it will bias the metering.

Thanks for all the pointers! The weather has been cloudy and very Warm & HUMID (lens fogs up when you walk outside), so I haven't been able to catch these guys again. Since I don't own a tripod/monopod I will probably try to reposition myself so I can utilize the sun a bit better to allow a faster shutter speed. Oh, well another missed opportunity.
