Pentax FA 85mm f2.8 soft

I just bought the used lens, and found it doesn't have A setting like other FA lens.
Futher I also found the aperture works only from 2.8 to 4.5 (indicated by information when viewing shots), when mounted to my K10d.
Can this lens be used on K10D? thanks

If you have any doubt, you can send it over to me. I'll check it thoroughly for you. It might take a few months, but...

I believe on this lens, the aperture controls the softness and the lens is always in a sort of A setting.

You may find this description useful: FA 85/2.8 Soft

I've never actually seen one of the soft focus lenses but it should work on the K10d. You might have to test the lens to find out which metering modes work best. If nothing else then stop down metering using the depth of field preview button should be fairly accurate.

In Av mode the lens will work from 2.8-4.5 in "stop-down" mode, and you should get correct metering. The stop down mode is so that you can see the soft focus effect as you focus/stop down.

From 4.5- 22 it "may" work in Av mode...you will need to test it bu looking into the lens as you take a shot and see if the aperture stops down correctly. If not, try manual mode.

Dear all,
Thanks for help! After some test I found it is a defected lens. Contacted seller and he agreed to refund me after I post it back.

A couple of things about the lens. It doesn't have an "a setting" for aperture like all other FA lens. Thus it can be only used by manual setting of aperture -- after referring to some information on line, I found it was designed this way, so that the "soft effect" is controlled by manually setting the aperture.

I believe the one I got has internal mechanical problem.

hopefully I can get the refund soon which will be used for other lens.

I have the "K" version of this lens. Only manual control of aperture is available on the "K", and as has been discussed this was how the lens was designed. The good thing is that it can be used in Av mode on my K10.

A specialised lens for portraits.
