Cleaning, F-Stop, Shutter Speed and a few things on my Z10

hi,

1st post so go easy on me - did a bit of a search, but couldn't find the exact answers so:

long story short: webmaster course next year, decided to go for a photography webpage portfolio, i want my own 35mm pictures, got my hands on a few cameras, one being a Z10 with a 35-80 lens;

questions:

1. when i set this to auto-focus, shouldn't the lens... err... well... focus automatically for me ? or should i be turning the dial until i hear the beep saying it's focused ?

2. the view-finder is darkened - the person before me admitted it was clean with alcohol, which i believe it damaged the plastic - any way to fix this mess ?

3. what does that +/- do (beside the viewfinder on the back) right side of the camera (darn, can't find a picture in the internet to link it here) ?

4. in the lenses, when i turn the A to 22 it lets just a bit of light in, and when i turn to 4 lets more light in ? is that what it's there for ?

5. i got 3 fuji films: 100, 200 and 400 - considering my pictures will be all shot in daylight, what shutter speed i should be using for them 3 ? for an example, i intend to photograph houses and old streets around my town, distance varying from 1mt to 10mt and with normal light conditions (should i use flash in the pictures?)

hmmm.. i guess it's all

thanks a million in advance

1. Is the camera set to AF ? What 35-80 lens is it ? Try giving the lens-camera contacts a clean.

2. If the viewfinder is damaged...get a new camera.

3. +/- will enable you to apply exposure compensation.

4. Yep, that is the purpose of the aperture.

5. your shutter speed will depend on what aperture you set !

Try and get a manual for the camera. Also do some google searching on photography basics. Once you understand how ISO/shutter speed/aperture combine to give you a "correct" exposure, you will be over half way there to producing good pictures.
