Pentax Utility 4 & XP

Hi,

My Pentax utility 4 sw crashes immediately after starting it. I suspect that there might be something wrong with XP, but can not find what. The error message is:

AppName: ptxutl40.exe AppVer: 4.0.0.7 ModName: ptxutl40.exe
ModVer: 4.0.0.7 Offset: 000f48ce

Has anyone have any ideas?

I have removed and reinstalled sw now some times and tried also recovery points of pc. I dont want to do full reinstallation of XP.

Hi Osmotf - welcome to the forum.

I have been running it for a week or so with no problems.

You could try right clicking on the icon and select "run as " and select "administrator".

If that fails, try re-installing PU4.

Thank you for welcoming :-)

I actually used PU4 without any problems for 4 months, then suddenly something happened and even reinstallating does not help. So probably there is something wrong with my XP, due the reinstalling does not help at all.

I too cannot run the utility on WinXP SP3. It seems we are not alone and that quite a few people can't run it.

I'm still trying to get it going. Tried installing from CD, no go. Update from web, no go. UNinstall all and install only web version 4.11, no go.

Last night uninstalled all using revo uninstaller (which hunts out leftover bits and deletes them), then searching through registry and deleting all I could find, then turn computer off for the night. Will try reinstalling tonight. If that doesn't work I''l not bother with it anymore.

Okay, re-downloaded the Pentax software v4.11. Resinstalled after all that uninstalling last night, and it still doesn't work. I give up.

I'm running SP3.

I downloaded it from Pentax Canada - PENTAX Digital Camera Utility 4 Update for Windows

Have you tried the "run as administrator" option?

Uninstall all Pentax software. Go into C:windows\prefetch, select all, and delete. Reboot. Now install the 4.11 software, inserting the 4.0 CD when asked.

Thank you

That works! Even though my identity on the PC is and administrator.

Is there any way to run it without having ti right-click and run as admin?

Good!

This is a bit curious. I am not generally the Administrator on mine (unless I log on specifically as such) but do not have to run as admin.

Other people have the problem you had.

Sorry - I do not kow what is going on.

Dear all,

the final reason has not yet found out, but this worked with me as a "quick" fix.
Find from net instructions about cleaning some related stuf out from microsoft prefetch (worst case disable some levels) and run your PU4 in w2000 mode. I did both and now it works.

To share some interesting answers from Pentax support:
they twice asked me to response either their mail from no reply returning address and in first mail they wanted to know my camera type and in second if I have tried install program again. OK - questions are ok, but ask either to response mail address that can not be replied or to call some number (I did not spend time to availability in different time zones) but...

I hope that some one can find this solution usefull.

Regards
Osmo

Hi Again,

I have to Admit that I did not actually realize the reason behind getting PU4 t owork again.
Now it seems to me that there is some compatibility issues. However,
I get same problems again after reinstalling XP and then after updating PU4 to version 4.11 these problems were solved by installing Pentax version 3 after installing 4.0 or 4.11. Both times after installing older sofware also newer start to work. So I need to install older sw after new and then also new starts to work. Probably there is some file that is over writed and that is crucial to compatibility.

Cheers !

This is the best solution. There has been an earlier thread on the problem at www.pentaxforums.com, and you may do a search in the forum's thread.

I remember that it has to do with the Check list. As long as you do not do batch processing (ie you do not check the photos), there is no problem.

If a senior pentaxian remembers tnhe earlier thread, it may be worthwhile to post the thread.
