First there are a lot of different adapters and camera mounts out there.
Second, the adapter has to match both the lens mount and the camera the lens is being mounted to. So the answer is no, any old lens won't work unless the mount suits the one on the adapters. The most popular and no fuss adapter is the M42 to Pentax K mount so if the lens is M42 mount it will work with that adapter.
I hope that's clear as mud.

re: M42 lenses
Some M42 Mamiya lenses have a sort of "lip" around the lens mount. They will work on Pentax M42 film cameras but won't mount all the way using the m42 adapter on K-mount cameras. They don't screw all the way on and are loose, so I would try Mamiya lenses before buying them, or I guess you could dremel the lip off.
I am not sure if other M42 lenses have this problem, but I don't think they do, I have never came across this with anything but some Mamiya lenses.

If the lens was intended to work on a Pentax camera, the answer is yes, it will work. if it's K-mount, no adapter is required; if M42, then you need an adapter.

If the lens was intended to work on something *other* than a Penax camera, then no, it won't work. In general, there are no adapters to make lenses intended for one brand of camera work on a different brand. Well, sometimes you can find someone who has cobbled something together as a shop project and mabe even sells them on Ebay, but it won't work well. You'll either lose infinity focus, or it will degrade IQ, and in any case there will usually be no automation of any kind.

There is also the M39 to M42 adapter.
Others can probably explain it further.

There is another problem with some (?) Mamiya/Sekor lenses. I've got me a beautiful looking Auto Mamiya/Sekor Sx 135/2.8 lens, but it can't be used because of the construction of the aperture ring. It is at the outer lower end of the lens barrel, so it gets tight to the camera body, hindering the setting of the aperture. Besides, there are three screw-holes in the rear end (read: the aperture ring), corresponding with the lens-lock of the camera...... So, there's no use for this lens, but if you want to leaf the aperture wide open....
