It is a VERY bad idea! I don't know about the newer cameras, but my K10D manual explicitly warns against focusing a non-quick-shift lens with the AF engaged.

The funny thing is, i just recieved my 55-300 and quickshift and override rotation feels awfully close. Thats pretty deceptive. Thanks for all the advice
