The OP is asking this question not to put on a 300, he has an 18-250, which the TC would struggle with also.
Right, I think the IQ from that lens and any TC would be disappointing.

@ eclipsed450 : Not odd then and, as I say, nice result.

I happen to ask about one in a local photo shop.
It was a 2x.
I knew nothing about them, but he DID happen to tell me that you lose to f-stops of light when you use them.
He couldn't tell me if you lose any picture quality.

Do you? And is that true about the aperture?

Yes your aperture does change when you add a teleconverter. However the change is dependent on the multiplier. For example, a 2x teleconverter on a 50mm F2.0 lens the teleconverter will make it 100mm F4.0.

As for picture quality, if you buy a low quality one your picture will definately decrease in quality. If you think about it. It's not too surprising your adding another piece of glass for the light to pass through.

That's what I figured, but for the $10 asking price, I figure it might be fun to play around with.
Anything else one should know about these things that hasn't already been mentioned?

one thing to note about the CHEAP (manual) TC's is that with newer (auto) lenses, you will lose most/all of the auto-lens functions (focus and aperture). I was just at a wolf camera in Nashville, TN and they had a quantaray 2x auto TC for $40. Allowed me to use the focus and aperture features of my smc 50-200 lens, but in the well lit store, my AF was having a HARD time finding a focus spot. When I get home, I'll post some pics from today with my 50-200 and $10 TC (QUITE happy with the results I saw on the LCD).
