Newbie Question About Auto Flash

Hello to the Group:

I just received my K100D yesterday and went outside to take a few shots. I was standing on the front porch shooting toward the Northwest with full sunlight to my left (about 5 pm). I took 6 shots using the autopicture mode and half of them used autoflash even though it was very bright. The exposures ranged from 1/500 at f8 to 1/125 at f4.5 and at focal lengths between 200mm and 50mm. I have never done any digital photography save with a point and shoot camera, but I am a casual 35 mm SLR user (Canon Rebel T2) and I have never had anything like this to occur in such a relatively bright situation.

My question is could there be a mechanical/electrical problem with this camera or is this to be expected? I wanted to get your input before I contact Pentax.

Thanks for your help.

I wonder if some of the auto pict modes weren't sensing a backlight situation. It can happen sometims in scenes with high contrast. I usually stick with PASM myself, not getting too much into auto pictures.

To solve that problem I just turned off the "auto flash". Press the Fn button and set the flash setting to manual. Then the flash will only pop up when you push the flash button on the back of the camera.

it was using the flash for Fill light- if the sun was really bright it could have sensed shadow and filled them in

Thanks to all who posted. I think I have an idea of what is happening and how to fix it.
