Basic question concerning backlight

What is the best way to compensate for shooting an object in or adjacent to a window of a relatively dark room, with strong sunlight in the background?
Thanks for the help.

Use fill flash.

Thanks Gary:
That's just too easy. I was thinking there had to be some complex process.

You can make it more complicated, reflectors and suchlike but if you have nothing else, fill flash will do the trick.

Just a note - flash is a way to equalize the light - to make your subject as bright as the scene behind him. If your goal is to simply make sure the subject is well exposed and you don't mind if the background ends up being much brighter, then the way to do that is to make sure the background isn't prominent in the scene when you meter. I do this by pointing at the ground and hitting the Green button there (in M mode; in other modes, it would be AE-L).
