k7 lens noob question

First off , hello pentax owners! Next Im totally new to the dslr field. I was lucky enough to receive a k7 as a gift and now want to learn.
My question is what type lenses with the k mount can I use with auto focus? I am confused and am trying to find me a cheaper 300mm lens to practice with while learning. Any and all help is welcome.

Welcome to the forum! This is a question that is asked quite a bit.

In terms of the mount - here is some information
K-Mount Evolution, Features and Operation

What your interested in are lenses. Here is a pretty concise summary...
Pentax Lens/Camera Compatibility - Mark Roberts Photography

For relatively inexpensive autofocus lenses I would stay with the FA FA-J and DA lenses - somewhat of an easy reference list to remember.

The current best consumer 300mm lens is the Pentax DA 55-300 running about $350 (I don't know what you consider inexpensive to be).

An inexpensive telephoto lens out to 300mm - there are a few (these would probably run around $100 +/-)...
  • Pentax SMC FA 100-300mm f/4.7-5.8
  • Pentax SMC FA J 75-300mm f/4.5-5.8 AL
  • Pentax SMC FA 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6
  • Pentax SMC FA 80-320mm f/4.5-5.6 (probably the best of these four)

There is also a newer DA 55-300 L lens that has a plastic mount that is only sold new as a kit lens with the new KX camera body. You might be able to find one on evil bay.

You will have to do some looking, the marketplace below is a good place to start. It may take some time to find something. All of these lenses are discontinued, but there are either used or new in box units available from time to time.

You can also try Sigma and Tamron (that have the Pentax mount). I am not as familiar with their offerings...

Then there are third party lenses....

Phoenix | 100-300mm f/5.6-6.7 Manual Focus Lens | P09222 | B&H

Phoenix | Zoom Telephoto 100-300mm f/5.6-6.7 Autofocus | P09580

Personally, I have always stuck with Pentax lenses. I had the FA-J version for a couple of years and it was alright - nothing special, but it did the job. Then I upgraded to the DA 55-300 which is a much better lens.

Others here have much more information to offer and tend to use telephoto lenses much more that I do.

Also, here is what is being offered on evil bay

... so hope that helps.

Good info already provided above (well done interested observer )
Also consider the cheap yet reasonably decent 'semi-macro' telephoto zoom by Tamron - the 70-300 Di. It's quite sharp for a consumer lens and has the ability to focus in quite closely to small objects like flowers with its 1:2 magnification.
