is the K-x a good enough camera for diving into photography? Or is it one of those "appeal to the masses" type of product. I am hoping for the first to be true.

Unless you have very specific needs where you can clearly state from looking at the spec sheet why the K-x wouldn't be sufficient, then the K-x should be more than good enough.

Any DSLR you can buy today will do. No doubt about that.
