I recently picked up this asahi optical co. smc pentax-m 1:2 50mm serial 8285183

I slapped this on my camera to play around with today and am having an issue taking early evening indoor photos with flash. Even at F-22, with the flash up my camera's max shutter speed tops out at 180, with the flash down its 4000. So when I am taking pic's with the flash up, they come out pure white.

When I set up my promaster to the same specs, with the flash they come out very dark.

I am new to photography, so I am sorry if the answer is an obvious one.

At f/22 indoors, you will probably see black, unless you have some ridiculous indoor lighting around your house. Do you know how to operate m series lenses on your camera?

Set the camera to M mode. Turn the aperture on the lens (not the body) to f/2 and press the green button. The camera will set the shutter speed. Try taking a picture. If you need to, raise the ISO up to a comfortable level and retry. When using a flash, try the aperture around f/5.6 and bounce the flash off the ceiling. Set the shutter speed low if you want some ambient light to come in or high if you want the room just lit by the flash.

Its a button on the camera. Its green. Its...er...somewhere by the right thumb area usually. Anyway, with an "M" series lens, the onboard flash will fire at full power everytime, I think. So you may need a higher aperture and f/5.6 to tone it down if the subject is really close.

There is more than one issue here.

1 When you use manual lenses, the flash ALWAYS uses full power.

2 Maximum flash sync speed is 1/180th. sec. This is normal. With a Pentax compatible external flash, you can use "high speed sync", which allows you to use higher shutter speed at the expense of range.

3 If your pictures are pure white, the diaphragm might be stuck wide open. Did you set your camera to allow use of aperture ring?

I can't say from what you describe which one it is, but one of your lens might be defective.

Well if I turn the apurture ring I can see the diaphram opening and closing. I guess I just need to read the manual to figure this one out.

ist / K100 use the AE-L button.

It does not sound like this will fix your problem though.

On the istDL the green button is also the AE-L button just where your thumb should be. That will set your shutter speed in manuqal mode. jim

I still am getting terrible results with the AEL button.

possible.. check it by setting a longish shutter speed (say 1/2 sec or more) and look at it (from the front of the lens) while you take a picture. If it does stop (close) down, try it at 1/30 & 1/60th and see if it seem sluggish (maybe it's not getting shut before the flash has fired)

Seems ok to me. Really weird because if I do the same settings with my Promaster, i get the opposite results.

I am guessing the flash is firing at full power, heck I didnt even know my on camera flash had different levels.

For now I guess Ill just have to set the ISO higher and not use the flash.

When you use any lens older than the A series lens, like your M lens, your onboard flash will only operate in Manual mode - full power (not p-ttl automatic mode). I would guess that the reason for you getting a white picture.
