Well, the 55-300 is by virtually all account the best of those lenses optically. The only reason people sometimes caution against it is that, compared to the *regular* 55-300, the "L" version alcks quick shift and a hood - but those other lenses lack quick shift, and hoods are not hard to come by. As for macro, get a $45 Raynox 150 and you've got *way* better than 1:2 macro on your 55-300.
