Is a 1:1 macro adaptor the same as a close-up filter?

I picked up a Promaster 100mm/3.5 MF macro lens (rebranded Cosina if I am not mistaken) that came with a seperate 1:1 macro adaptor. I was just wondering if there is a difference between this type of 1:1 adaptor and a regular close-up filter. I ask, in part, because I am wondering if using the adaptor on another lens with 49mm threads (like a FA50 or FA77) would be worthwhile.

It's possible the lens is a 1:2 magnification and the adapter is needed to bring it up to 1:1.
It more than likely is better than a regular close-up filter unless you're talking about a good one (like the Raynox).

Seeing as you have it, just try it and see what results you get, there's no need to make comparisons if you're happy with the results.

If it is the adaptor I am thinking of it plays really nicely on other lenses... I have the raynox and a sony 3358 but always wanted to get my hands on one of these too...

Attached are pictures of the actual lens and adaptor.

FWIW, I tried the adaptor out (briefly) on my FA 77 just now and it seemed to work well. The 100/3.5 itself isn't too bad either. Hopefully I'll have some time this weekend to fool around with it
