Macro newb questions

Hi all,

I have a couple super-newb question about macro lenses.

1. If a lens is a "macro lens", what EXACTLY does that mean? I've seen macro photos (they looked macro to me - like CU of a bug) that weren't taken with a macro lens. And I've seen photos that are certainly not macro photos, but taken with a macro lens. So what does having a lens labeled as a macro lens do for you?

2. When used for macro photos, what does the focal length mean? How would macro photos look if taken w/ a 35mm macro lens vs. a 100mm macro lens?

Thanks!
Greg

As I understand it, a macro lens will focus closer than its standard or normal counterpart. For example a 135mm macro might focus down to 39 inches, where as a normal 135mm focuses to 55 inches.

A macro photograph (my uneducated understanding) is showing small detail in a large way, either an extreme close-up of a "normal size" object, or an enlargement of a tiny object (your bug for example)

Focal length has to do with the enlargement factor, which I don't really understand. You'll see some macro lenses rated at 1:1, 1:2, 1:4, etc ... which is how big the object is projected onto the sensor. Wikipedia has a lot of math to explain it better.

The focal length of the lens affects your working distance when doing macro work. Example, if your taking a picture of a bug, and your using a 50mm lens, you then take the picture again with a 100mm lens, you will be further away from the subject with the 100mm lens, but assuming that both lenses are 1:1, you will still get the same magnification.
