Thanks everyone

Thanks guys, that is helpful. For example I never thought of the fact that using LV will induce camera shake and will be uncomfortable on something heaver than my G10. I will concentrate on the viewfinder.
I am going to a big shop next week probably so I'll just stay there all day and try everything I can.

Pentax looks extremely promising (looking mostly at K7), low price body, low price lenses (important for my wallet, but also I am going to lug the camera on long trips in the mountains, so there is some danger of accidentally braking it), sealed body and cold performance (again, mountains). What I am worried about is about the dxomark dynamic range of the K7 which seems pretty low compared to D90, A550, A700 etc. (I do admit I don't really understand all this so to what point is this rating relevant?)
One thing you might consider is a k-x instead of a k-7 if DXO scores are important. (You will need to use the Nikon D5000 as a stand-in for the k-x, but they share the same sensor.) I don't think that you would get any argument from anyone here, that the k-x IQ is superior to the k-7. It also may be a good choice for you since you are new to DSLR's. The cost is significantly lower, and if you find you made a mistake somehow, it is a lot easier to "back out."

Sure you lose weathersealing, but is weathersealing really that important to you?

pentaxpoke... I would argue. no doubt that Kx has high ISO advantages, which is minimized by shooting in RAW but to say there it has "better IQ" is inaccurate.
I do agree however that Kx could be an option to consider.

I would take the advice of ivoire, work out the features and lenses you are interested in and then make specific comparisons of the options.

oh you say that Pentax lenses are inexpensive than Canon and Nikon...if you have 200 USD you can buy a "brand new" lens like 50mm f1.8, in the case Pentax lenses if you have that money you can only buy a used pentax lens. I think pentax prefers QUALITY over QUANTITY on their lenses especially on their awesome limited editions

I believe the DA 35 f/2.4 AL is less than $200? And the DA 40 f/2.8 XS isn't a lot more. Who knows about the coming 50 f/1.8... Looks like Pentax is building up an entry level range of primes.

And it's not the optical quality that's cheap on the 35 and 40.

In the beginning of 2010 that was probably the case. Why do you wake up an old thread?

Because the information is more than likely not relevant to the OP

So somebody will keep this thread updated with relevant price information? Like when Canon or Pentax introduce new lenses or new prices.? I don't think so There always seem to be new threads showing when prices are increased and decreased which in my opinion is a better way.

Interesting resu of a very old thread, now I'm wondering what the OP decided to do. I'm guessing he didn't choose pentax cause he only had two posts.

This thread is still relevant as I'm sure there are still people everyday trying to decide between Pentax or Sony.

Basically what are your thoughts about: which brand's bodies will give me the best experience (Live view and viewfinder, and dynamic range) and will allow me for a good range of lenses? I am really mostly hesitating between Sony and Pentax but feel free to add anything you deem relevant.
Thank you in advance.
Have you looked at the Olympus OMD? Live view and focus speed is incredible, so much better in live view than a DSLR it isnt funny. Good range of lenses. Weather sealed. Small and light which is ideal for hiking and outdoors.
