Need Help with taking portraits

A friend had asked me to do a portrait of him, his sister, and his dog (german shepherd).
I told him I do not have the required skills yet, but he said he does not care, and just plans to have photos to give to his parents before they both leave.
This thread has 2 purposes, I would like some advice on lighting, and how to take good portraits, and what equipment I will need?
Second part is if anyone knows of a place where you can rent equipment in the Windsor area? If not, if there is a fellow photographer, that I would be able to rent from?
My kit is as follows
K7
kit lens
FA 50mm f1.4 (what I will most likely be using)
Sigma 70-300 (dont see how this would be useful)
Auto Chinon 50mm f1.9
DA 10-17mm

Thanks

Actually you could use the zoom at about 100mm to give a really nice look to it. Since I don't see any flash listed you may try available light thru a window. Maybe buy a collapsible reflector to kill some of the shadow on the dark side of them. For some of my own stuff I have been using black fabric as a background since I can select it almost as easy as a greenscreen and drop in another background I like. It's not a seamless background but it works. I just built a stand out of 1" PVC pipe. With a white background depending on how you light it you can get a pure white, a light gray and a dark gray. So it's 3 in 1. The material was really cheap at Joann Fabrics.
If you have a flash you could use it off camera to light the dark side at a really low power for fill light.

One other thing is try experimenting before hand with a stand in. See what placement looks good to you. Then when the day comes you'll look like you know what you're doing. I used a stuffed animal as a stand in so I could get set up for the shots of my 8 month old. The stuffed animal was a touch less cranky then the boy. And it allowed me to work faster on the real deal as I already knew what settings and placement I liked.
