Vivitar mount not fitting

I just received a cheap Vivitar lens from Ebay. I got excited and tried to test it out on my Kx when I noticed it was not attaching properly. It looks like an old K-Mount, except the inner part (the black instead of the shiny part) of the mount is longer. I carefully put it back to see if that was the problem and it looks like it is the only problem keeping it from fitting.

Is it possible to make it fit without ruining the camera?

There should be some very small screws on the silver part that hold the black part in place. Remove these and remove the black piece. It is probably hitting inside the camera.

After taking that skirt out you may want to file/saw the excess, paint it black and screw it back.

I had a similar problem with an old Vivitar zoom. The directions linked by RuiC is one of the best references out there. The only catch with my lens was that the screws to remove the collar where on the time not the side. The screws are really small, so be careful. I also found that making the the initial vertical cut with a small file and then taking the rest down down with a grinding wheel on a Dremel tool was quite effective. Finally I polished off the final cut with some fine sandpaper.

just be sure to paint the cut surface to avoid glare.
