The pictures are of pieces of costume jewellery I've made from a base of recycled aluminium drink cans. The variation in light quality was because of the changing reflection from a building opposite mine.

Now those look much better. You nicely utilized the advice to put more distance between the subject and lens, along with stopping down and the results look great!

Now if you want a little more sharpness, just use a little post processing software too:
