The sigma 300 2.8

I have narrowed my choices down to the Sigma 300mm f/2.8 EX DG IF HSM APO Telephoto Lens.
Since I am new to DSLR use i want to ask some questions to make sure i get what i want.
I have read some good revies about this lens with the Sigma 1.4 and 2.0 T.C.

My question is it going auto focus with out any problems?????
I think it will but I want to make sure.

Also i find them on Amazon for around 2,999 is that about right or should i keep looking.

Thanks, Gary

Hi Gary,

first, I think the price is fine. This lens is hard to find as a second-hand item and for a new one, I guess you have to pay about that price everywhere.

Second, I think that both Sigma tcs will work with that fast lens, they do with my 70-200/2.8 and I can't see a reason, they wouldn't AF with the 300/2.8. At least the 1.4x does not exhibit any loss of image quality (though lab tests sure reveal something...) and the 2x version shows only a small amount of image quality degradation - very acceptable.

It should work fine and sounds like a reasonable price. I guess you know already, but this is a very large lens and you will need a tripod up to holding it...

Note that the Pentax mount version doesn't have HSM.

Which is fortunate, as the tcs also don't offer HSM/SDM...

Thanks

Ok. Thanks everyone. I am going to order it now. Along with the 1.4 apo and 2.0 apo t.c.'s

I am new to Pentax cameras and am very much looking forward to learning and having you all as my friends.

I am hoping this lens will fill my void for a good birding lens. I own the 55-300mm. I like it very much but i want something to reach a little farther. With out breaking this poor old man...

Thanks Gary
