KX firmware update

Hi there, Ive just opened my brand new Pentax KX box with twin lense kit, My very First DSLR and wondering if its still necessary to do a firmware update on this camera? Im only thinking because most of the battery issue concerns were last year and because Ive got this camera from B&H just recently perhaps its not necessary.......

CANT wait to get out and have a play!

I have read somewhere about a button (combination) to press when you power up the camera; this will display the firmware version. Don't know which button (combination).

As an alternative, take a photo and inspect the exif data on the PC (e.g. with SilkyPix); if I remember correctly, the firmware version is in there.

For K-x:
To check the version number, turn your camera on while holding down the MENU button.
The version number will appear in the center of the LCD screen.

You can find the update file and instructions here:

The cameras shipped out have the firware 1.0 by default. I received mine on Friday and it had version 1.0. Hold the menu button and turn on the camera and it will display the current firmware version. If its 1.1 then your good, else you need to upgrade.

You don't run it via the computer anyway. Do you have a card reader you can connect to the computer?

1) FRESH batteries in camera. (If not, you'll be sorry!)

2) CLEAN, formatted card.

3) Extract firmware and put on card at root level--not inside a folder.

4) Power up camera and follow the prompts, and DON'T TOUCH until it's done.

While holding the Menu button... The firmware update should take 2-3 minutes. You will see a progress bar while it's taking place. Phase one from what I understand is prepping the camera for the update (possibly deleting the old software?), Phase II is flashing the new firmware on to the camera. When it is completed, your screen will show Complete and you can turn off the camera at that point. ANY interruption of power during this process will turn your camera into a pretty brick. You can then either pay Pentax to recover it for you or use it as an interesting paperweight.

There Have been cases where for some reason the FW update fails to complete. The camera gets Stuck in Phase One and stays there (should take about 60-90 seconds). I've seen reports of this both on the Kx and the K7. In THESE cases, from what I understand, Pentax will revive the camera at no service charge.

Good luck (99.9999999% of the time it works without a hitch).
