Helios Issue

Yesterday, I got myself a K-x, finally.. It's in the kit with 18-55, 55-300. So far, I'm a little disappointed about the sharpness and the low-light performance, well I was expecting less noise, but in the daylight the camera is pretty good. I'm impressed with the handling also because it really is a very small camera but feels like a lot bigger.

I don't if it's the right place to ask this but anyway, I bought a Zenit Helios 44K-4 F/2. I was pretty excited until I tried the lens out. Helios lenses, at least for me, are all about the "rounding" bokeh and seems like my Helios lens does not do it's purpose. I realized something today that there are two Helios 44K-4 lenses. One is Helios MC 44K-4 and the other is Helios 44K-4. I have the second. I don't know any difference between those two. I did a quick research but I couldn't find anything.

There is actually another thing that I can't be sure if it's a problem or not. The lens has a range of F/2 to F/16. But I cannot change it when the lens is mounted to the camera. Even more, I tried to mount it when it's on F/16 but while putting it in, the lens automatically, or maybe somehow mechanically, sets the A F/2.

I'll upload some photos later also. I really want to figure out this.

Thank you.

There are actually more than two types of the Helios 44.
Have a read of these: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/31430-soviet-lenses-club.html
As to the Helios pin here it is: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/90229-aperture...es-heliii.html
If you don't want to read the whole thing then this is the fix so you can change the aperture: Manual Focus Lenses :: View topic - "Repair" How to - make Helios 44M-6 usable with N
If you read through the whole thing it would also mention an easier method by cutting a piece of hollow plastic from a cotton swab (“q-tip”) and inserting it over the pin inside the lens.
Hope this helps.

He has the K mount version. It should work like any PK lens.

The camera will always hold the lens open to it's widest setting, F2. You have to go into the menu and set it for aperture ring allowed. Then use in manual mode with the green button. You set the aperture manually to what one you wish to use. It will not work in an auto fashion.

To allow aperture ring instructions are on page 284 of the manual.

Thank your for the response, I figured out how to set the A. Now I'm thinking of buying a 50 mm M 1.7. Do you think I'd need it when I already have the 44K-4.

If you can get one cheap... there is enough difference in focal length/and rendering to make it worth it if the M50 is cheap... like 20/25 bucks

- As for sharpness of the Kx... I have the K100 - K20 and Kx. The K20 and kx neither one look "sharp" to me right out of camera jpeg. But they sharpen up much nicer than the K100 in post processing. No reall sharpening halos or any thing. The 18-55 kit is not very sharp in my opinion at least until F8 or so and that is not a range I shoot. The 55-300 is not bad though.

Try a little contrast boost and a bit of sharpening in post production and the Kx should be as sharp as anything else.

That seems like a lot to me, but I am a cheapskate! Plus your market may be very different than mine.
