K-x lens hood

I'm a newbie and a little confused about this so please bare with me as I'm trying to get started on the right track.

I just purchased the K-x with the 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL & 50-200mm F4-5.6 ED lenses.

In looking through the lens documentation it states that the lens hoods are (PH-RBA 52mm for the 18-55mm & PH-RBB 52mm for the 50-200mm).

Looking on Adorama.com it shows a PH-RBA 52 & PH-RBC 52 for the 18-55mm and a PH-RDB 49 for the 50-200mm.

I don't want to assume anything here but is it possible that ANY of the PH-RB* 52 series will work with both lenses? The pictures look identical (I know that means nothing).

Any help or knowledge on this would be most appreciated.

They will probably both fit either lens but the one for the 50-200mm will be much deeper as it has a longer focal length and can handle the deeper hood. The 18mm width of the smaller lens will need a much shallower hood. Putting the hood for the 18-55mm on the 50-200mm lens would be next to useless. The pictures must be just generic examples.

Get the hood designed for the lens you need it for.

You must be looking at the wrong pictures. The hood for the 18-55 is a "petal" shaped hood; the one for the 50-200 is more of a plain cylinder.

I think the 49mm you are seeing is for the WR version of the 50-200, which is slightly smaller than the other versions.

Check fleabay as they have a third party manufacturer for these.
It is cheaper than the OEM hood.
Probably made in China and is a copy.
It would be good as it is only a hood.

I was able to purchase a hood for my 18-55 on eBay for $5.00 shipped. The quality was no-where near that of the Pentax hood but it got the job done.

Not all hoods are made the same. Better ones will have special coatings or angled tiers to deflect stray light away from the glass.

Still, can't remember what the 18-55 has but it's probably just plain plastic and I doubt a 3rd party copy would be any worse.

The official Pentax hoods for the 18-55 and 50-200 are both just plain plastic (Albeit very sturdy stuff).

Pentax's hoods for their DA* line are the best in the photo world methinks; Internal coatings, rubberized edges, etc.

That's the one I bought, but I was able to find it for like $5.00.

It can be mounted reversed, it's a bayonet mount and it's not too shabby. The plastic is slightly cheaper than Pentax's hood; It wouldn't survive too big a drop.
