new to HDR, need help/insight

I am new to photography, and am interested in trying out this HDR that I have read a lot about. I realize that it is a lot of post-processing, but the coloring that it adds to pictures I think can be very neat looking in the right setting.
Anyway, I have searched the forums and google, but am having trouble finding a tutorial/beginner's guide out there directed at people very new to photography. Any help you guys have is greatly appreciated.

What I have:
Pentax K-x with kit 18-55 and 55-300
Lightroom 2

Thanks in advance!

Check out It has a lot of examples that run through the entire spectrum (from the very overdone to the sublime) and has a lot of resources for getting started with hdr. Your k-x can process hdr in-camera, but I am not sure how well it does that. There are a few standalone apps that can help post - process your shots. I use Photomatix Pro, but there is also FDRTool.
Enjoy! It is fun, frustrating and sometimes rewarding

I also suggest YouTube. YouTube has some great tutorials for everything from basic LR2 functions to Photomatix Pro (HDR software). Lightroom 2 also has a plugin to export straight to Photomatix.

According to HDR's site, the KX isn't supported yet.

The in camera HDR can give you a good idea of where you want to go with HDR, it gives realistic looking photos IMO, but maybe not the interesting ones you are after.

In info:
1) Set camera to jpg (cannot be RAW)
2) Turn on HDR
3) Set camera on tripod
4) I like using a remote, as it keeps the camera in the same spot for the 3 shots over 1 sec. (You can find one really cheap on ebay)
5) Take lots of photos!

Icy, what does a remote have to do with it?

I plan on doing the same thing as the OP, and starting with the kx's internal HDR processing.

A tripod is definitely mandatory, but you can use self timer to eliminate any shake. Plus, on the kx, the self timer locks the mirror up for even less vibration. Must be the same for other models too.

I tried HDR the other night for astrophotography with my Pentax Kx, shooting the Orion Nebula with a Celestron Comet Catcher telescope (500mm FL, f/3.64.) As near as I can tell, the "normal" HDR setting (versus strong) seems to give you three exposures at +/- 3 stops. So a 3 second exposure gave me one 3 second exposure plus a short one of about 1/3 second plus a 24 second esposure. The thing that surprised me is that there was no Dark Frame Subtraction done, even for the 24 second shot (at ISO 12,800!) A stack of 30 such HDR exposures were then stacked with Deepsky Stacker to give a decent final image. I did have more detail, and less burned out area, than I would have gotten with thirty 30-second exposures... but I got less of the nebulosity as well.

I wonder what the STRONG setting does??? +/- FIVE stops, maybe??

Does anyone KNOW what the range of exposures are for the two settings?

I use on like this: Pentax Remote Control F - BRAND NEW for K7, K20D, K-x on (item 320496280426 end time 13-Mar-10 07:09:51 EST) But I like the idea of the self timer...
