K10d + Metz 48 underexposes in remote?

Hi, I have a k10d and a new Metz 48 AF-1
it all seems to work well but for some reason if I have the Metz off the camera the
flash works but at any distance it seems to not give enough light and results in dark images which look like the result that you get if you used the built in flash to far away from the subject.
I doubt this is a known fault so I must have something set wrong, has any one a step by step set up for the k10 and the 48 if used remotely?

I have the K10 as a backup and when used with the metz 48af1 it also under exposes off camera. a plus 1 ev is required to get the correct exposure.
