I have a few old perfectly good condition flashes for the hotshoe, I have a KX do you have to have compatible flash to the pentax or can you use any? I dont want to ruin my camera by attaching them to find out!

Be care with third party flashes as the voltage and power surge can damage your in-camera flash mount. Most of the recent Pentax flashes would work, but still check Bojidar Dimitrov's Pentax K-Mount Page for the flash data to make sure. There are also discussion of third party flash in this forum that you can search as well.

You are more likely to get meaningful answers if you post the brands/models of your flashes.

From what was posted prior to your post I think thats been the most useful, Its not worth the risk.
