application for pentax DAL 50-200mm?

Hi All,

could somebody help me figure out what situations i would be able to use the 50-200mm lens? i've used the k-x in 2 occasions, once at a birthday party at Dave and Busters, and then on a trip to Sequoia national park. and in both occasions, i find the 50-200 too narrow to be useful.

i am thinking of forcing myself to use the 50-200mm this weekend at Huntington Library/Garden, any advise?

thanks in advance

regards,
M

Go here: PENTAX Photo Gallery
Then go here: PENTAX Photo Gallery

I have been using it quite a lot in shooting some events on stage lately.

The point of a telephoto lens is to make small or far away things look bigger or closer - simple as that, really. A telephoto lens is basically half a pair of bincoluars, and you'd use them in pretty much exactly the same situations.

I don't have your particular lens, I opted for the 60-250, which I often use for landscapes and pictures of my dogs.
I'm sure the 50-200 would be good for this as well.

If you have the 18-55mm then bring it along to accompany with the 50-200mm when you're in the Garden .

This picture was taken with the 18-55mm ALII @35mm when I went to that Huntington Library/Garden around this time last year .

I'm not sure if you will have much use for the 50-200mm at the garden. Unless it's not too busy you will most likely be using the 18-55mm lens for a lot of the shots. The 50-200mm lens is usually used for taking pictures of objects that are far away from you. but be warned that at the 200mm focal length you will need to keep still or have enough light to use a fast shutter speed.

It's not quite that simple. I'd add that telephoto lenses are useful for producing a small depth of field (only a small amount of an image in focus, depending on aperture and the distance from your lens), and for appearing to compress the distance between objects. Many people think that the compression of distance depends on focal length - not true, it depends on the distance between you and the subjects, it's just that people tend to stand back further when using a telephoto.
