It's not quite that simple. I'd add that telephoto lenses are useful for producing a small depth of field (only a small amount of an image in focus, depending on aperture and the distance from your lens), and for appearing to compress the distance between objects. Many people think that the compression of distance depends on focal length - not true, it depends on the distance between you and the subjects, it's just that people tend to stand back further when using a telephoto.
