K-X zoom & portrait lens in 1

Dear All,

I am a beginner in this forum and just recently acquired my k-x with the 18-55 kit as gift from my wife two months ago. I am now considering to buy a new zoom lens that can double as a good portrait lens. Image quality is my priority followed by bokeh.

Thanks in advance to all.

what price range are we looking at?
On the cheap, a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 would be nice, or the same with 17-50.
It's also not a bad idea to at least try out primes with an A 50mm 1.7. Theyre rather cheap, but produce great pictures.

The DA*50-135mm sounds like a good complement to your kit lens..

I agree that the 50-135 is the obvious candidate here. Of course, if after seeing the price you decide that mney actually trumps IQ or bokeh, I'd suggest athe much cheaper 55-300 or 50-200. They certainly cover the right focal length range, but at f/4 or f/4.5 max, so not quite as flexible for portraits. Still perfectly usable if you have any control at all over lighting and background.

I'll third the recommendation for the DA* 50-135. If you're not willing to stomach the bill of it, I'd suggest the DA 50-200 over the 55-300 unless you absolutely need the reach. The 50-200 has always managed to surprise me.

thanks for your suggestions. i also think 50-135 is the best for these purpose but indeed money plays an important factor here so am looking at the 50-200 or 55-300 range since i already have the 18-55. which one is better iq wise? 3rd party lens is also an option. thanks again

As you'll see if you read any of the dozens of other posts compring the two, the 55-300 is the better lens, and is generally better than .any of the 3rd party options, too. But of course it's more expensive, and bigger/heavier than the 50-200. Do check out those dozens of existing threads if you want to see more discussion of the various options but that's about long and short of it.
