Which Flash?

I've had my K1000 for just over two years, and use it regularly without any problems. I've by no means mastered the use of, it but am pretty happy using a camera without any auto functions.
But I don't have a flash! yet.
Problem is I don't know much about them, and most of the information out there seems to be centered around flashes for DSLRs.
I would like a flash that's pretty versatile, and one which would give me a lot of control - although at the same time I don't want to spend hundreds of pounds on my first flash! I've been looking at a few on second hand sites, but I'm not sure they're what I want: AF280T AF400T AF400FTZ etc...
I'd appreciate any advice people have, and also general information on possible flashes for a K1000. What do all the acronyms mean?

Welcome to the forum.
Hands down the best is the AF400T flash and they are usually around $75-100 USD here. They were $500 when new. I have 3 and use them on my DSLR's. But I used one with a Pentax LX, K1000 and a 6x7. Great flash in every respect. Make sure it comes with: Battery holder, Flash cable (4p) and the long bracket. Without those, it's impossible to use (it does have a PC socket but you need a battery holder and bracket).

If that's hard to find, get an AF280T. Also very good but just a little less flexible.

Btw why not list the terms you are unfamiliar with instead of us trying to guess what you need to know.

EG: TTL means Through The Lens (metering)

I am looking to buy a new flash for my K10D and there are quite a few threads over here Camera and Studio Accessories - on the Studio accesories board about all the dif. flashes. I"m still not sure which one I want to buy. I thought i had it narrowed down until I posted about them and now I'm confused again haha

With your K10D, your choices are limited to AF 360 FGZ and 540 FGZ from the Pentax Brand. There are also other brands such as Metz, Sigma that I haven't used, but I don't think you can go wrong with either of these two.

The main difference being the 360 doesn't swivel and has a lower guide number.

I suggest the Cullmann D 4500-P, it's a good flash and costs not to much 150-200 $. You can rotate it the head at 180 and fold it at 90.

Here the link
