Using auto mode is a good way to start off using the camera. Once you start to learn your camera and what it can do you can venture off into the other modes as you see fit. For me, I started in Av mode and I pretty much still keep it there. If the camera isn't doing what I want it to do I will put it in M mode and make the necesscry adjustments.

I think You'll find that a large majority of experienced users use either Aperture Priority or Manual almost all of the time.

Pretty much the same here. I use the Av mode and if something is off, I either use exposure compensation or the manual mode. I use the Tv mode for panning, showing movement etc.

I personally used AUTO for the first few weeks with my K-x. Soon after, I used the different modes like Av and such, and now I'm normally on M.

I use Av and M mostly. I started out with Auto... then moved to P. Got a manual "A" series lens and moved to Av and M.

Started with M (had a friend who convinced me that was the way to start) and now use AV and M exclusively. M for macro/tricky lighting and AV for everything else...

I went immediately to P for that little bit of extra control. Depending on my situation I will use Av or Tv. I rarely use M yet.

I use mainly full auto on my sfxn but as some of my other cameras have aperture priority I am thinking of experimenting with that on the sfxn

Does anybody care if it's noob or not? I don't, as long as it gives the pictures that one needs.

Since I got a SLR in the 80s I have been shooting Av 99% of the time. Now using M more because I'm using M42 lenses on my K10D (almost exclusively).

Sterretje is right; if you get the picture that you want, isn't that what matters?
You learn more by using other modes.
I tend to use Av mostly.
In fact, unless I want to control DOF, the camera sits on F8 day after day, because that's where picture quality seems to be best on my usual lens.

I started with fully Auto then I took some course and took my share of pictures, now I use Manual as much as possible. I use Aperature priority some also and shutter priority if the circumstances warrant it. My cousin does alot of profesional portrait stuff and uses Aperature priority almost exclusively

Makes sense, as that is how the DOF is influenced.
