Thanks everyone for all the advice!

I'm ordering a new focus screen today.

Focusscreens.com have very detailed step by step replacements inctructions with lots of pics!

I found that on my KM the noise is noticeable at around ISO1600 and pretty much unbearable at 3200. I'd suggest you set 800 as the limit. This isn't really going to affect image quality that much but I'd suggest you crop and play around with your images via a computer and not the camera. you get more control that way and it would be easier to do.

Wow, that first photo sure does have a wild background. As you said it actually looks fake because of the green grass in the bokeh. Also, I would agree that the noise in the first is a little much for my liking, but you will get better with time. Just make sure to read the manual and get plenty of practice.
