Not it

The remote I was given by Pentax dosen't look like that..This is what I received...Very tiny. Smaller than a USB key.

That's identical to the IR remote I have. Works fine but I prefer the old cable remote, Canon, that I bought to use with my IstD. The reason I prefer it is that all I have to do is plug it in and it's good to go. No menu changes needed.

I used the Twin1 remote control ... can be used as IR and cable connected as well.
Good for bulb mode with half shutter too at night.

That remote looks like it has 12 extra do nothing buttons.
The F remote slips sweetly in to the battery grip.

I was going to buy the F remote myself but one reason I didn't buy it was precisely because of its size, another, it's absurd price. I knew I would lose it sooner or later. Yeah sure, it fits in the grip and all, but size isn't what's important to me.

Instead, I opted for a GE TV basic universal remote. Unlike those sold on e-bay, the one I bought looks stylish, has only the basic buttons, and it fits beautifully on the palm of my hand, just as an ergonomic remote should.

Hi "Frogroast"

As a matter of fact I did see your original post and managed to find the model you pictured online at a few sites. I fired-off a couple of E-mails to these companies in the U.S., but have thus far not yet received any replies !! It often happens that mail-order outlets in America seem unwilling to sell stuff outside their home territory.
Therefore I don't think there is any way I shall be able to get hold of this item, because GE products are sadly not marketed over here in the U.K. I know it sounds like a bit-of-a-cheek, but if they are still available locally, is there any way that you could possibly purchase one for me ?? I will naturally re-imburse all your costs inc P&P etc by whatever means suit you !! I did note that there is another slightly 'lurid' variation of the same model, which is endowed with some pretty awful green and purple buttons, but I would prefer to get hold of the grey one illustrated in your post, as it looks slightly less 'obvious' etc

Best regards
Richard

Here's another option:
Wireless Shutter Release for Pentax K10D K110D K100D - (item 230156798294 end time Aug-04-07 19:37:47 PDT)

No line of sight necessary and it supports Bulb mode. I'm sure Ben would have all sorts of fun hanging the K10D in weird positions for his photoshoots :-)

To "kenyee"

Thanks for that useful link, which I'd not seen before ! The Bulb mode would certainly come in useful for night shots or long exposures.......and it looks like quite a neat solution ! I believe that infra-red devices seem slightly more unreliable under certain circumstances i.e. require direct line-of-sight. My friend once had a TV which used a wireless r/c and I remember that you could almost bounce the signal downstairs from his upstairs landing and it would still change channels more reliably than later infra-red ones !

Best regards
Richard

I have one of these

Bought this model- cheap, works at 50 feet -(I tested it and it actually does) and you don't have to be in front of the camera which makes the IR models useless for wildlife shots, at least on the K100. The other one linked looks possibly even better - longer range anyways.

Thanks Tom

It seems there is obviously quite a selection of third-party r/c alternatives out there for Pentax users to choose from. Going back to my original enquiry, does anyone reckon that the other buttons on the JJC RM-E4 serve any useful purpose i.e. autofocus, display, magnification etc ?? There are clearly defined legends printed on most of the other controls and it would be disappointing to discover that this device was only capable of triggering the shutter !!

Best regards

I'm pretty sure that's all it is capable of doing. It is made for a variety of cameras (including p&s), with many of the buttons usable on them, but not on the k10d.

This has come up in the past. Unless Pentax does another firmware update to support those capabilities, the only button that works is the shutter release on those 3rd party IR remotes.

That's why I also went w/ the YongNuo wireless one...bulb mode, can be fired w/o being in line of site, longer range, etc...
