SDHC for Pentax K-x

Just purchased a Pentax K-x and I do not have a SDHC card yet. When I do, is it required to format it in the camera as the K-x instructions indicate, or will it work for storage as soon as it is inserted? I am getting a Kingston class 4, 8Gb SDHC. With other devices such as phones and computer devices, I have been able to just pop these cards, SD and MicroSD into the devices for use.
While waiting for this card I have another 1Gb SD card that I use in another device. Can I test the camera with this card, without formatting it and without removing the few files that are currently on it? It is probably 90% free right now.

If it's new just put the card in the camera, it will work . I just got my new K-X and put a new card in it. Mine was a class 6

i would go with atleast a class 6 just to make sure you dont get any corrupted images.
i have a eye-fi 4gb class 2, i think, and one out of maybe 10 pics is not viewable. the card is cool with wifi and geotagging but i dont want to loose that 1 pic that could be the 1.

The K-x has problems with class 10 cards... I had one and it would corrupt images randomly. I called the manufacture (this particular one was a transcend) and they said that they have had several complaints from K-x users on the class 10 cards...

Get a good Class 6 like the SanDisk Extreme III. They are the best!

Has anyone compared a class 10 to a 6 or anything less than a 10? I have a Patriot 8g class 6 and I don't know if just its me but it seems really slow at transferring from card to computer. Can anyone say that the class 10 is much faster?

That's interesting about the Trancend Class 10 I've just bought an 8gb one to use with
a Samsung GX-20 and yesterday when I put the card in having already used it about
3 times, the Camera flashed up CARD ERROR. I switched off and took the card out, put
it back in again then the camera on and this time it worked OK. I took about 10 photos
and looked at them on a XP Desktop and they were fine.

I looked at some from the day before on the same card but in the previous days
directory some of them showed up OK others just showed a Black picture. I tried
copying them to the HD but Explorer couldn't do it. I tried deleting one of them and it
couldn't do that either so I tried Scandisk on the card and it didn't find any errors
although it did say it would need to re-boot to fix any it found, which I thought was
ridiculous, Windows 98 could fix stuff on a removable drive without a re-boot.

Obviously something wrong so I took the card to a Windows 7 Desktop and ran
Scandisk on the card and it found truncated files in the Dir I had problems with.
I let it fix them but the images were messed up so I deleted the dir. Only about
12 unimportant images were lost.

This morning when I booted the XP machine up, Scandisk stopped it from starting until I did a scan. It seemed to fix it but I'm concerned that some files may be damaged.

I've never had any problems at all with my usual cards, Toshiba White in 4 and 8GB.

The Toshiba White's even though Class 6 are also faster.

I would format it in and for YOUR camera. Who knows what the factory does :-)

The test on the Transcend card used 500MB by mistake. I've just
re-done it using 100MB, same as the Toshiba White 8GB and it is
a lot slower.

I use a transcend SDHC 8GB class 6 and have no problems with file transfer speeds or pictures in rapid fire mode or movies.

Its not the fastest card but it works.

You should be able to test the K-x with the 1GB card without formatting it. I don't know if you will be able to test movie mode. If your new card will be mainly used for the camera, I would use the camera's format.

The Reader can make a difference though.... ?
What Reader did you use? There could also be a difference
between CrystalDiskMark 3.0 and v2.2

3) PNY 4GB Class 4
4) Panasonic Gold 4GB Class 10
5) Panasonic Olympic 4GB Class 10
6) Unbranded 4GB class 4(??)

Get a good Class 6 like the SanDisk Extreme III. They are the best!

I've been using two Sandisk class 10s in my Kx and have had no problems whatsoever. I've also used class 6 cards which exceed the class 10 specs. No problems there either.
